Long-term programming of body size

Article Abstract:

Genetics probably play a role in determining various aspects of body size and physique. A major recessive gene effect seems to contribute to body mass, the ratio of weight over height, and body fat. In contrast, fat-free mass, bone characteristics, and physique are not clearly linked to a genetic factor. Environmental influences, such as diet and exercise, may produce only limited changes, according to research on twins.

Human variation in body mass: evidence for a role of the genes

Article Abstract:

Variations in human body mass appear to be related to genetic differences, but lifestyle and environmental factors play an important role as well. Linkage and association studies indicate that specific genes may play a role in body mass determination. Earlier studies had concluded body mass was affected most by heredity, with little demonstrable effect stemming from environmental factors.

Genotype-environment interaction in human obesity

Article Abstract:

Genetic factors determine the specifics of individual obesity during genotype-environment interaction (G x E). A series of studies suggest that people respond uniquely to energy surplus, such as changes in diet or exercise. Genetics regulate the varied adaptations in body weight and body fat measurements. It is possible that several gene variations are involved in this mechanism.
