On the methods for studying the mechanisms and bioavailability of iron
Article Abstract:
Molecular mechanisms involved in iron absorption and bioavailability should be studied to aid international efforts to control the high incidence of disorders associated with iron. Better methods of studying the chemical and physiologic mechanisms and bioavailability should be developed so that ultimately interactions in humans can be affected to improve food iron bioavailability. In vitro model systems using animal cells or tissues have mostly been used, but often have been criticized because rats and humans absorb iron differently.

Diagnostic utility of serum transferrin receptors measurement in assessing iron status
Article Abstract:
There are various problems or expenses associated with traditional laboratory tests of iron status, but recent attention focusing on the measurement of serum/plasma transferrin receptors (TfR) has shown merit. TfR can detect mild iron deficiency and distinguish anemia secondary to inflammation. The measurement of sensitivity, specificity and reliability as compared to traditional measure of iron status is assessed.
