Alkynylation of chiral aldehydes: Alkoxy-, amino-, and thio-substituted aldehydes
Article Abstract:
A review focuses on the diastereoselective synthesis of propargylic alcohol via alkynylmetallic additions to chiral 2- and 3-alkoxy-, amino- and thio-substituted aldehydes as well as the different combinations of their 2,3,-disubstituted counterparts. Variations of cation, solvent temperature, and protecting-group effects on these reactions are studied, and it is shown that reagent control or use of an external chiral inductor is extremely effective in controlling reaction diastereoselectivity.

Saving and demographics: some international comparisons
Article Abstract:
The savings rates in the US, West Germany and Japan during the 1980s aree presented. It is shown that West Germany's and Japan's net national savingswere three times and six times larger than the net national savings of the US. Additionally, it is shown that the percentage of US citizens belonging to the high-saving group is lower than that for West Germany and Japan. However, US citizens belonging to the high-saving group are expected to increase by 50% in the year 2010.
