The scientific basis for RDAs
Article Abstract:
A maximum of 10% of calories should come from monounsaturated fats according to two recent reports, one from the US Surgeon General. Some nutrients may not be the basis of a deficiency when missing but still may promote health. Some feel there should be RDAs for such nutrients. The Asian population should have a different set of RDAs from those used in the US and UK, and a harmonized program for studying this group would be useful.

Identifying research needs and setting future directions
Article Abstract:
Recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) and nutrition labeling practices used across borders would be helpful in Asia for international trade. Minimum requirements and optimal health requirements are not the same and some think two values should be given, including a requirement for preventing frank deficiency and one for cutting health risks.

Harmonization of recommended dietary allowances: implications and approach
Article Abstract:
Recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) need to be globally harmonized. For individuals, the RDA should depend on age, body weight and physiologic and metabolic status. In groups, quality of diet, effects of food handling and bioavailability of nutrients must be considered along with individual variations.
