Waist circumference: a useful index in clinical care and health promotion

Article Abstract:

Waist circumference may have greater accuracy than other traditional measurements in determining obesity-related diseases. Systematic measurement of waistlines did not begin until the second decade of the 20th century. Since then, researchers have drawn data from ratios such as nape-to-sacrum or waist-to-hip. The body mass index has been thought to be most accurate, but obtaining this data requires a more complex procedure than measuring abdominal girth.

A genetic mutation in PPARgamma is associated with enhanced fat cell differentiation: implications for human obesity

Article Abstract:

A rare genetic mutation is linked to extreme types of obesity. Specifically, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) gene has a mutation leading to a receptor that cannot be blocked. Previous efforts associating leptin gene mutations to obesity have not been successful. Better understanding both genetic and environmental factors of obesity will be required to combat this global malaise.

Predicting obesity in children

Article Abstract:

Recent studies has indicated that children who are obese will become obese adults. Children are more inclined to become obese young adults if obesity is present in one or more of their parents, or if they were obese during a stage in their childhood. This research may help in developing preventative measures and treatments for obesity.
