Working group session report: HIV/AIDS working group
Article Abstract:
HIV-associated weight loss is a complicated biological condition that may produce multiple causal determinants in a patient or group of patients. These determinants include adequacy of alimentation, integrity of digestive and absorptive capacity, and the balance between anabolic and catabolic metabolic pathways. To determine the magnitude of weight loss appropriate for study eligibility, three types of criteria are usually applied. These are given. The body composition measurements and endpoints for clinical trials for HIV-associated weight loss are also discussed.

Working group session report: chronic renal and gastrointestinal disease
Article Abstract:
The results of a discussion on wasting in chronic renal and gastrointestinal failure participated in by clinicians, nutritionists, physiologists and researchers from industry, academia and the federal government is presented. Wasting is defined as weight loss greater than or equivalent to 10% of the normal body weight. The optimal approaches to assess and monitor body composition changes in large clinical trials and the endpoints that should be employed to prove efficacy for agents applied to treat wasting are discussed.
