Working group session report: wasting in geriatrics and special consideration in design of trials involving the elderly subjects
Article Abstract:
The influence of wasting on health outcomes of elderly persons is assessed. Episodic weight loss in the elderly may happen as a result of various chronic states. Physiologic processes in old age may restrict the response against stress and speed up change in body composition that may result to inadequate recovery from illness and high probability of functional decline. The optional approaches to evaluate and monitor body composition changes in large clinical trials and the endpoints that should be employed to prove efficacy for agents applied to treat wasting are discussed.

Working group session report: cancer
Article Abstract:
The assessment of cancer patients for nutritional status presents many difficulties in clinical practice because the interpretation of tests may lead to ambiguities. Some of these difficulties include changes in the tumor mass, effects of anti-cancer therapy and effects of therapy for supportive care. To avoid these difficulties, the categories to functionally assess wasting in cancer patient were reduced to a set of three. These are discussed. Suggestions for evaluating new therapies are also given.

Dietary treatment in secondary wasting and cachexia
Article Abstract:
The application of nutritional support to treat critically ill patients in acute care hospitals who suffer from protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) of the hypoalbuminemic variety because of burns, trauma or severe sepsis is analyzed. PCM is a result of diseases that include cachexia, marasmus and hypoalbuminemic malnutrition due to semistarvation and the systemic inflammatory response. The nutritional implications of the systemic inflammatory response are discussed.
