Harvest NW timber, federal judge says

A federal judge has upheld a provision in the federal budget bill passed in Jul 1995 authorizing the cutting and sale of 170 million bd ft of timber in the Pacific Northwest. Congress had also authorized the sale of another 270 million bd ft of green timber. The White House has stalled on authorizing the former provision, to protect the endangered marbeled murrelet. The EPA will soon rule on a Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund suit blocking the sales.

Cut coastal trees, US judge orders

Article Abstract:

Oregon and Washington federal timber on 6300 acres can be harvested, according to the Jan 19, 1996, decision by US District Judge Michael Hogan. Congress passed a law in Jul 1995 that allows timber harvests where no marbeled murrelets' nests or spotted owls' nests are found. The timber industry filed a lawsuit against environmentalists' objections that had prevented harvesting since 1990.

MB, others to phase out clearcuts; will it make a difference?

Article Abstract:

British Columbian courts ordered lumber companies including International Forest Products to stop clearcutting on lands claimed by native American tribes. MacMillan Bloedel announced plans to halt clearcutting protect habitat and preserve old-growth timber. Environmental groups hailed these measures, but some forestry specialists predict more fires, insects and storm damage.
