Loaders standardized at wood treating plant
Article Abstract:
Koppers Industries Inc's wood treating plant in Florence, SC, uses improved material handling systems to increase its productivity. The plant pressure-treats square and round wood products such as utility poles, bridge timbers, railroad switch and cross ties and crossing panels. Kawasaki front-end loaders move incoming raw wood to stockpile areas and outgoing treated products to storage areas. Most utility, distribution and transmission poles are custom-ordered by utility companies.

High BC costs may shut some wood processors
Article Abstract:
British Columbia (BC) forest products companies and the government have agreed to study logging costs in the province. The companies claim that high costs could force some of the BC's mills to shut down, and they have offered to open their books, to prove their case. Provincial forests minister Dave Zirnhelt admitted that costs are higher than expected. Logging costs in 1996 were 70% higher than they were in 1992, according to a Price Waterhouse study.
