Australian Democrats: from Chippocrats to Green Laborcrats?

Article Abstract:

Australian Democrats' twentieth anniversary year came with the resignation of Cheryl Kernot from the Democrats and Don Chipp from the Liberal Party. The Australian Democrats, as the oldest minor party, became the most successful, and some question their continued success in the future without their leader, Kernot. Kernot plans to represent the Labor Party in the House of Representatives. However, Democrats contend that they are still committed to their execution of future plans and will play a significant role in the Australian politics.

Electoral retribution: Hanson struggles on

Article Abstract:

Pauline Hanson and her One Nation Party were a political phenomenon in 1997, following Australia's 1996 election. Early polls indicated she adversely affected the Labor Party, others since show her drawing support from the National Party and ideologically forming a Right wing to the coalition government. Hanson opposes Aboriginal land rights, non-Anglo immigration, multiculturalism, and welfare programs.

On the road from Kurwongbah: the Queensland liberals stalled

Article Abstract:

The results of the Queensland by-election for the state seat of Kurwongbah in 1997 could be the beginning of the end for the Queensland Liberal Party. The party had been mired in some very shaky public performances during the six months leading up to the by-election. Further eroding the party's electoral base has been a series of public gaffes and in-fighting.
