Article Abstract:

The global chocolate companies pledged to uphold the Harkin-Engel Protocol, a voluntary measure that gave the companies to develop a system that would certify cacao beans used in their various products to be free of slave labor. One of the reasons for the increased use of inexpensive child laborers is the sharp drop in the price of cocoa beans and farmer who lacks a steady income will continue to use children to farm the labor-intensive crop.
