In defense of cold, dark, New England houses

Article Abstract:

New England homes built during the Colonial period usually had very small window space in proportion to the wall space. Glass had to be imported, was taxed and was thought to allow too much heat to escape. It is why these older houses do not have much natural light.

One New England house available for less than $100,000 is an 1870 house on Birch Island. The house needs remodeling, but it has red pine walls, a maple staircase and full-length second-story porch. The asking price is $90,000.
