Ultradian growth in Prochlorococcus spp
Article Abstract:
A novel division pattern wherein some cells divide twice in rapid succession is responsible for the ultradian growth in species of the marine prokaryote Prochlorococcus. Ultradian growth refers to growth faster than one division per day. This remarkable rate of growth both in situ and in culture was gleaned from diel measurements of DNA frequency distributions. Light intensity or duration did not affect the timing of cell cycle events, indicating control by a light-triggered timer or circadian clock.
