The great escape

Article Abstract:

The Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Germany held 700 prisoners and was supposed to be escape-proof. One prisoner, a South African named Roger Bushell, organized efforts to dig escape tunnels and outfit prisoners with proper identification and clothing. Only three men made it to freedom.

James Forten: an American forever

Article Abstract:

James Forten fought for the freedom of African Americans in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Forten, who was born in Philadelphia in 1766, spent his life donating money to free the slaves, boycotting businesses that promoted slavery and promoting patriotism among African Americans.

A different kind of hero

Article Abstract:

Journalist Ernie Pyle was a small, shy man, but his sensitive writing about the life of everyday soldiers in World War II made him a hero to many. Pyle was killed while covering the invasion of the island of Ii-shima.
