Statistics show that the percentage of children living apart from their biological fathers grew from 17% in 1960 to 36% in 1990. This trend is also considered the reason behind social problems such as crime, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and underachievement in education.

A study to assess fatherlessness revealed that a father's role in his children's lives ranges from management of emotions to intelligence and academic achievement. Losing a father through desertion is worse for a child than losing him through death.
