Changes in the structure and duration of U.S. unemployment, 1967-1998
Article Abstract:
Unemployment is studied using steady-state measures of expected duration. Particular attention is focused on the time-series properties of unemployment by duration and reason of a typical spell of unemployment. The results showed that strong countercyclicality is relatively uniform in unemployment durations regardless of the reason for being unemployed. However, an upward trend in duration of unemployment is due to permanent job loss which influences the trend.
