Consumer sentiment: its causes and effects
Article Abstract:
The factors associated with changes in consumer sentiment were studied. It is generally assumed that consumer behavior coincides with business cycles. Different views of the determinants of consumer sentiment as contained in the Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment were explained. A vector error correction model was used in order to avoid problems associated with time dependent variables and variables with random time trends. It was concluded that consumer sentiments are a result of economic conditions and that these sentiments influence rather than start business cycles.
