'Crisis, Choice, and Change' in retrospect
Article Abstract:
The resurgence in the study of institutions among American political scientists during the 1980s does not represent an innovation, only a rediscovery. It appears innovative only to those who came to the genuine study of political science from reductionist schools that held sway in previous decades. Marxists had reduced politics to class conflict, the rational choice theorists to calculations of short term interests on the part of individuals. The model of analysis offered 20 years ago in 'Crisis, Choice, and Change: Historical Studies in Political Development' remains cogent today.

Risk and governance, part 1: the discourses of climate change
Article Abstract:
The accounting of risk as perceived by the public requires a restructuring of political approach. The conventional expert/layperson approach should be discarded, along with the notion that perceived risk is not necessarily actual risk. Political scientists should take into consideration the many different influences exerted by the public on policy formation.

Policy in a complex and plurally perceived world
Article Abstract:
Unconventional policy wisdom can illuminate the risks of global climate change. The discourse over global warming is organized triangularly. The dynamics behind the development of discourse should be examined in terms of pairwise alliances that have dominated at various stages. The triangular model provides a reflexivity aid.
