Does external funding of academic research crowd out institutional support?
Article Abstract:
Most empirical studies show that if the amount of support given to a non-profit institution by one source increases, support from other sources tends to decrease. In the case of funding academic research, crowding out seem not to occur and increased contributions from one party leads to increased contributions on the part of other sources. This supports the theory that external sponsors give more money to institutions which have high quality research. Also, changes in funding from one source have multiple effects on other funding sources. Current non-profit models need to be structured into a more dynamic formation.

This journal: early days
Article Abstract:
Ghita Ionescu shaped the objectives of the journal 'Government and Opposition' and the way the journal was managed and produced. The journal was developed to respond to the lack of critical thought about governments existing between the extremes of democracy and totalitarianism. The editorial board could become sharply divided in the journal's early years, but Ionescu was able to personalize conflicts and share his enthusiasm.
