Hazardous waste: one of California's fastest growing exports
Article Abstract:
California exports its toxic wastes because it is easier and cheaper than treating these wastes within the state. California aims to limit its production of toxic wastes and urges producers to adopt new technologies which are environment-friendly or use recycling and treatment methods. But in the meantime, its waste disposal to other states continues although these waste recipients have started to limit California's waste import into their territories. The state is now striving to decrease its waste output while forging friendly and cooperative ties with its neighbors.

A life among the homeless the underside of the California dream
Article Abstract:
The former executive director of Los Angeles Men's Place (LAMP) which is a drop-in support network and shelter, describes the deteriorating living conditions of the poor, the lack of support from the government and the activities of her network for the homeless and mentally ill. She believes in doing direct service as it can help to understand both merits and demerits of the society. Electoral politics cannot solve problems such as the homeless crisis and the government should take notice of neighborhoods and provide support to them.

California is not Florida
Article Abstract:
The question whether any state that uses the kind of punch card ballots that made Florida famous for hanging, pregnant and dimpled chads was holding a fair election is discussed. The views of Kim Alexander, the president and founder of the California Voter Foundation, an organization that studies electoral use of technology, in this regard are presented.
