Protecting the California environment

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists and industries of California have been fighting over environmental issues since the 1970s when environmentalists with the help of the legislature started to campaign for new environmental protection laws. The state passed important laws such as California Endangered Species Act and Forest Practices Act. The Environmental Protection Information Center has successfully contested many court cases concerned with the environment in the 70s and 80s but in the 1990s the industries and corporate friendly Senate have thwarted attempts to draft laws which aim to protect the environment.

The California dream of higher education

Article Abstract:

The California dream of higher education has withstood the test of time. The basis for the dream lies in the accessibility of very high quality education for all those who want it, and are ready to put in the labor for it. A sound education policy based on powerful ideas has been developed in almost two centuries. However, the scene is slowly changing and opportunities are becoming less. A number of trends can be seen as a threat to higher education in California.

Another endangered species: California's biomass industry

Article Abstract:

California's attempt to deregulate electricity will affect the biomass industry which will loose state subsidies. Biomass generators use 1.7 billion tons of urban plant waste and clean the forest of underbrush, twigs and spindly trees which helps to prevent forest fires. The renewable energy resources industry, in response to a request from the California Public Utilities Commission, submitted a report in Feb 1995 on ways to support the biomass industry.
