Thirty at thirty: To mark California Journal's 30th anniversary, we've selected the 30 men and women who had the greatest influence on California government and politics in the 20th century
Article Abstract:
30 men and women who had the greatest influence on California government and politics in the 20th century are profiled. There are just three women among the 30 as men dominated politics and power positions in government for most of the past 100 years. The women profiled are Rose Bird who was Supreme Court chief Justice from 1978 to 1986, Dianne Feinstein, California's senior U.S. Senator, and Leone Baxter, who together with her husband Clem Whitaker, launched the country's first public relations firm devoted solely to politics. The top 30 lists includes governors, including Hiram Johnson, Ronald Reagan and Jerry Brown, speakers of the assembly and United States senators. Less obvious choices include Harry Bridges who helped revitalize the dormant labor movement, Harvey Milk the first openly gay politician and William Mulholland.

School reform goes back to the ballot: an inside look at the 1996 California school reform initiative
Article Abstract:
The state of Californian public schools present a distressing picture and efforts are on to prepare a reform initiative for education, to be introduced in the 1996 presidential campaign. The standard of education in California is low, with at least 50% of college freshmen attending remedial courses, and drop-out rate in high schools and crime rate in schools is increasing. Red tapism and financial problems plague the educational scenario. All these factors make reforms imperative, and the American Educational Research Foundation is working with other professionals to bring out changes in the field.

The California economy: 1970 to the 21st century change, challenge and opportunity
Article Abstract:
Californian economy of the 21st century must address issues such as the provision of quality education and the building of quality institutions that play a crucial role in improving the economy in the 1970s. The economy, unlike that of the 1970s, will depend primarily on the motion picture industry, foreign trade and the non-manufacturing sectors. The 1990 Californian budget should aim to provide more aid to state and local governments for the resurgence of the economy.
