Some thoughts on transition: a comparative view of the peace processes in South Africa and Northern Ireland

Article Abstract:

'Peace process' is a new concept which has gained currency and there are some prominent similarities between the processes in South African and the Northern Ireland which reveal a pattern of transitional stages. The first step for both countries was an agreement among fighting factions that violence should be stopped so negotiations could begin. This includes decommissioning weapons in South Africa, which should be attempted in Ireland. Once this happens, the status of former paramilitary participants need to be clearly established. Political and constitutional questions will also need to be discussed and agreed upon.
