Greening of Germany spells trouble for main parties

Many German voters are now starting to support the Green party, having become disillusioned by the complacency of the established political parties. In some states, the Green party is now holding the balance of political power, and some observers believe that this could eventually happen at a national level too. The Free Democrats (FDP) have been particularly badly affected by the swing to the Greens, and this may rob the Christian Democrats (CDU) of a coalition partner.

Testing, anyone?

In 1997, the California state government introduced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program as part of an education-reform package that introduced the controversial Stanford-9 basic skills test, or SAT-9, which is administered in English to all grade 2-11 California public school students. Critics see the program as strictly political.
