The central valley "sting": "Operation Rezone" exposes corruption in Fresno and Clovis
Article Abstract:
The FBI is in the process of investigating allegations that politicians of Fresno, CA and its suburb of Clovis are trading land-use votes for money. The investigation has charged seven men, including a Clovis councilman who has since resigned. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Sacramento reported that 15 to 20 people are under observation for their alleged role in these corrupt practices. The investigators involved in this operation, code-named Operation Rezone, have been empowered to probe other charges which range from extortion to conspiracy to tax evasion.

The time of the Valley
Article Abstract:
The Valley along Highway 99 in California is the world's most productive agricultural region, but ranches and farms are increasingly being replaced by housing and the population is expected to reach 15 million by 2040 from 5 million in 1999. Valley residents are often humorously self-deprecating about having their roots in the Valley, although the Valley itself has faced a constant identity crisis. Californians who do not live in the Valley wonder how its inhabitants can withstand the heat.
