Explaining total factor productivity differentials in urban manufacturing
Article Abstract:
The output growth rate and population have a positive and important effect on the productivity growth of urban manufacturing industries, but the rate of population growth has a negative affect on productivity. High output growth is connected to high productivity growth. Relatively high proportions of modern, new manufacturing industries are located in rapidly growing areas, leading to larger productivity increases. However, productivity was not increased by the post-1973 capital stock that was added. Instead, the growth resulted from either regulatory influences or other dislocations and adjustments related to the energy crisis at that time.
