An Application of Simulation Modeling to Surgical Intensive Care Bed Need Analysis in a University Hospital
Article Abstract:
Due to facilities expansion, the University of Cincinnati Hospital became concerned about availability of surgical intensive care beds for the future. To evaluate bed planning alternatives, the hospital hired Health Facilities Planning Associates, Inc. A simulation model was used, utilizing hospitals with statistics similar to those of University Hospital. Patient data was analyzed to determine arrival patterns, length of stay, and bed occupancy. Modifications were made in the model to simulate the effect of future demand. Simulation could not adequately reflect the needs of practicing physicians and the current mix of patients.

Business as usual? Changes in health care's workforce and organization work
Article Abstract:
The health care industry is experiencing dramatic changes in the organization of work as well as in work force. These changes are manifested in the drastic shift in the composition of the workforce, which has seen a move away from specialists to generalists. There also has been a shift to team-oriented work performances away from autonomous work performances. These shifts raise questions that have direct bearing on the future of health care practice in the US.
