Are trustees prepared to lead through health reform maze?

Article Abstract:

Hospital trustees must become involved in the health reform process by studying the issues to determine which measures they favor. To keep trustees informed, CEO Bob Sloane of Anaheim, CA, Memorial Hospital invites state legislators to trustee meetings. Other hospital administrators stress the need for cooperation between trustees and physicians, who may fear loss of income. Executives of several large hospitals discuss possible solutions to managed care and financial problems associated with health care reform.

Credit enhancement: hospitals, investors seek better value

Article Abstract:

Investors entering the lucrative market for credit-enhanced hospital bonds should be careful to seek the best value for their money because letters of credit (LOC's) and bond insurance, the investment vehicles which hospitals use, sometimes shield underlying problems in creditworthiness, allowing the institution to achieve an AAA investment rating. Hospitals have remedied the problem somewhat by substituting LOC's with liquidity-backed variable rate financing.

Managed care in the 1990s: providers' new role for innovative health delivery

Article Abstract:

Rising health care costs in the 1990s will make it necessary for hospitals to sharpen their managed care systems. While only 15% of the US population is enrolled in a health maintenance organization or preferred provider organization, hospitals still need to emulate the same cost saving measures that these managed care systems employ: integrating administration, finance and delivery.
