Managed care and technology adoption in health care: evidence from magnetic resonance imaging

Article Abstract:

This article finds that diffusion of magnetic resonance imaging in hospitals has slowed in areas that are heavily insured by health maintenance organizations (HMOs). This finding could indicate a slowing of adoption of technological innovations where HMOs are prevalent.

The effect of HMOs on fee-for-service health care expenditures: evidence from Medicare

Article Abstract:

A variety of fixed effect models based on metropolitan statistical area levels was used to establish the relationship between health maintenance organization (HMO) market share and fee-for-service health care expenditure. Using data gathered by the Health Care Financing Administration on its 1986-1990 expenditures, it was determined that concavity in health care spending is prevalent over the period examined, with maximum market shares between 0% to 10%. Expenditure reductions of 3.4% to 7% are linked to market share increases ranging from 20% to 30%.
