Benchmarking: a technique for improvement

Article Abstract:

The application of benchmarking in the health care industry is urged to identify aras where improvements can be made. Benchmarking, as developed by Xerox Corp, involves the search for an industry's best practices that lead to superior performance. The 10 typical steps in a benchmarking process are described for the benefit of health care practitioners. These steps include identifying what is to be benchmarked as well as company candidates for benchmarking.

The missing element in such business improvement strategies has been the absence of cross-organizational interaction toward improvement. One company which has been able to achieve impressive business improvements by promoting cross-organizational interaction has been General Dynamics Corp.'s Electric Boat Div.

How to use benchmarking to reduce planning and purchasing costs

Article Abstract:

Benchmarking processes in planning, purchasing and scheduling services were initiated by the Enterprise Resource Planning Unit of Eastman Kodak Company to allow the company to compare its procedures with other companies and pick strategies which would offer the best in terms of cost reductions to processes. This benchmarking activity allows the Eastman Kodak unit to justify the needed changes to be made in its planning and purchasing decisions.
