Boom (and bust) in the physician management market

Article Abstract:

Physician management companies (PMC), a form of for-profit managed care, is currently enjoying a boom period, with increased capital from Wall Street and good earnings potential. However, PMCs will experience a shakeout, beginning as early as mid-1997, as poorly managed businesses falter. While physician-hospital integration remains a key strategy for non-profit hospitals, institutions should expect increased competition for physician practice acquisition from PMCs.

Article Abstract:

Television broadcasters are launching new health-related TV networks to help doctors continue their education on various medical issues. Westcott Communications and Insurance Broadcast System are among those television broadcasters that have launched TV networks with medical profile. Managed care plans are planning to shift more public health care responsibilities to primary care physicians and are implementing better operating cost-cutting strategies.

A credit to quality?

Article Abstract:

Medical practices are audited by each of the health plans in which they participate. The result is much duplicated effort, because physicians participate in an average of 12 plans. The American Medical Assn is advocating a nationwide accreditation program under which doctors would only have to undergo in one evaluation process.
