Champions of change; today's CFOs learn to say 'yes' to TQM, patient-centered care and critical paths
Article Abstract:
The roles of today's hospital chief financial officers (CFOs) are being redefined using the concepts of total quality management and continuous quality improvement (TQM/CQI). Patient-centered care and clinical paths are dictating changes in how hospitals make investments, how financial reports are presented to the board and how hospital financial decisions are made. TQM/CQI principles applied through a hospital's CFO ultimately improve hospital planning.

Transition to a new future; an expert lays out strategies for a redesigned system
Article Abstract:
Transitional strategic planning for hospitals in the 1990s will attempt to establish a health care delivery system that bridges the past health care systems to the new one. The transitional plan will emphasize educating and informing the public about health care services rather than marketing, which has been emphasized in the past. In the transitional phase foresight, evaluation and implementation are essential to blend the two plans.
