Commentary: whither the not-for-profit community hospitals - observations on the Josephson-Schneller dialogue
Article Abstract:
A discussion is made on the arguments posed by Josephson and Schneller on the issue of whether or not not-for-profit (NFP) hospitals should stay. Josephson advocates the release of tax exemption of NFP hospitals and their transformation to investor-owned (IO) institutions. Schneller, on the other hand, believes that NFP scheme should remain and if reformed, may prove responsive to health care delivery needs. Several issues are discussed concerning the sale of NFPs: fair market price, who receives the profit, and the nature of governance of the new establishments.

Commentary: not-for-profit status as a vehicle for sector diversity and organization
Article Abstract:
The not-for-profit scheme should be used in facing the existing crisis in health care delivery. Despite the criticism that not-for-profit hospitals today have seemed to abandon their original mission, voluntary hospitals should not be terminated. NFPs have the special feature, given their unique mission and freedom from stockholder involvement, to serve as vehicle for the fulfillment of health care goals.
