Consumer's share of costs is on the rise

Article Abstract:

The study by the Lewin Group indicates that premium costs for private health insurance coverage grew 35.9% from 2000 to 2004, while the average individual earnings grew only 12.4%. The number of Americans whose healthcare costs exceeds 25% of their income rose to 14.3% million from 11.6 million. On the other hand, the report by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) indicates that the Medicare premium would rise 17% to $78.20 in 2005, and the average social security recipient could spend about 20% of his social security income. These results point towards consumers having a difficult time paying their deductibles, etc and opting out of insurance coverage.
