Contract-management careers: risks, rewards

Article Abstract:

Contract-management careers offer employees benefits as well as risks. Administrators may feel pressured to succeed because the contract-management firm guarantees results for the hospital. At the same time, the firm may offer the administrator resources such as consultants and the opportunity to confer with colleagues. Contract administrators are able to accrue benefits from job to job, while stand-alone administrators lose them when they relocate. They may, however, be required to relocate more often than regular hospital administrators.

Consulting careers: the myths and realities

Article Abstract:

Top-level hospital executives should think twice before starting a new career as a consultant to the health care field. Many hospital executive are not aware that consulting brings with it a multitude of new requirements necessary for success in the field. Consulting is a profession with its own body of knowledge, standards, ethics and values. Medical consultant's tasks are very different from those of a hospital administrator and require a number of unique skills.

New path: today's executive career path: new realities, responsibilities for hospitals

Article Abstract:

Finding the best candidates for administrative positions provides hospital management with increasing challenges. The overall flattening of the hospital's administrative structure has meant fewer positions from which to draw internal candidates. Hospital administrators must be proactive in evaluating possible candidates while avoiding charges of discrimination. Some hospitals have successfully used mentorship programs in training aspiring administrators.
