The top 10 pharmaceutical companies spend between $1 billion and $2 billion each per year on the research and development of new drugs. Industry-wide, research costs have nearly quadrupled over the past ten years. R&D costs vary from $80 million to $350 million per product. Despite the phenomenal success of blockbuster drugs, only one in 4,000 compounds makes it through the FDA testing process.

Linking Medical Records with the financial arm of the hospital may enhance Medical Record's influence on administration. By moving into the financial arm of the hospital Medical Records personnel, who know both the languages of finance and medicine, will be able to provide an effective communications link to the medical staff.
