Expression of class I and class II major histocompatibility antigens on human hepatocellular carcinoma
Article Abstract:
Tissues from one individual can not be freely transplanted into the body of another individual because the body is able to detect foreign cells. In part this identification is made because of molecules present on the surface of cells belonging to the major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens. When organs are transplanted, tissue of both donor and recipient are tested for compatibility of their MHC antigens. Previous reports have indicated the human liver cells do not have factors on their cell membranes which compose the major histocompatibility antigens. The current study examines this finding using microscopic detection of MHC antigens using human cancer cells. Results indicate that all cells tested in this experiment showed evidence of MHC antigens. The authors were also able to demonstrate some differences in staining of several variants of the MHC antigens.

Identification of a point mutation resulting in a heat-labile adenosine deaminase (ADA) in two unrelated children with partial ADA deficiency
Article Abstract:
The composition of the gene responsible for Adenosine Deamimase Deficiency (a severe deficiency effecting the immune system) was explored by analyzing cell lines from two partially ADA-deficient children. A defective gene was identified. The authors showed specific mutations at the site of the gene. A similar change was seen at the same gene location in a patient with partial adenosine deaminase deficiency.
