Going private to capture savings
Article Abstract:
One of the toughest niches in the industry is the provision of health care to the American prison population. These services have been usually provided by in-house staffs the federal, state, and local levels, but the increasing prison population is also forcing costs to rise. Between 5% and 15% of the $3 bil spent on prison medical care can be saved privatization. However, the issue of medical care quality must be addressed as well when privatizing.

Decision Innovations' new PlanSmartChoice software product is designed to help prospective enrollees choose from among the health plans available to them. The product, being marketed to business coalitions and individual firms, is an offshoot of Decision Innovations' contracts to help federal employees choose from among 400 available plans.
