Health Care Service Utilization under Two Types of Insurance
Article Abstract:
In an effort to further reduce health care costs, the government is attempting to reduce usage of health care services. This trend is creating an interest in health care service utilization. Dolfman describes a recent study using four Philadelphia hospitals. Statistical tables are provided for each sub-area studied. They are: 1) population demographics, 2) premiums and paid charges, 3) admissions, 4) inpatient utilization, 5) length of stay, 6) diagnoses and 7) expenses. Dolfman reviews the study's methodology and findings. Results show: 1) employees tend to utilize services more than their dependents, 2) female employees have a higher utilization rate than their male counterparts and 3) obstetrical care was the most common reason for admission.
