Making a win-win partnership
Article Abstract:
Global competition has necessitated the partnership of customers and suppliers for their mutual benefit. Xerox Supply Group and Avery Dennison are market leaders who have developed new ways of delivering products to their customers by removing the cost within the supply chain. Both companies have benefited in terms of shorter lead times, lower overall inventory and increased profitability. Several business ideologies had to be changed to achieve these benefits. A hands-on explanation is presented to demonstrate how to build a working partnership between two companies.

Harley-Davidson Motor Co converted its Parts and Accessories Div and its Purchasing and Inventory Management departments into a supply management function made up of buyer/planners. A buyer/planner was defined at Harley-Davidson as an individual whose responsibilities include sales forecasting, inventory planning and procurement of a particular line of parts and/or accessories for motorcycles. The functions were essential to improve the company's quality, participation, productivity, flexibility and cash flow.

High-performance cycle counting

Performance cycle counting is a technique to measure inventory record accuracy and correct errors found in inventory records. The technique uses sampling to identify inaccuracies and their potential impact on business operations. The common types of cycle counting sampling are control group sampling, random sampling and ABC sampling, which are differentiated by the manner in which samples are taken and compared.
