Malnutrition in patients with pressure ulcers: morbidity, mortality, and clinically practical assessments
Article Abstract:
Studies have established a relationship between malnutrition and pressure ulcers as causes of death or morbidity in elderly patients, so assessment of patients' nutritional state can provide information leading to more effective treatments. Measurement of serum albumin and ideal body weight (IBW) should be part of routine assessments as they offer valuable information concerning patients' nutritional status. Early recognition of malnutrition can help reduce many cases of morbidity and death.

The application of collaborative benchmarking to the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers
Article Abstract:
A study to establish criteria and sequence for prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers shows collective research can improve the quality of care. The health market is under constant pressure to develop effective, cost-efficient procedures, and collaborative benchmarking is a viable means to this end. The study identified 54 best practices in pressure ulcer care which can be adapted to fit a wide variety of institutions.

Analysis of the measurement of four wound variables in elderly patients with pressure ulcers
Article Abstract:
A study of the effectiveness of four different techniques for measuring the size of pressure ulcers was conducted on 11 aged patients. The four measurement methods were: volume measurement, which involved filling the wound with gel, area measurement, perimeter measurement, and depth measurement. Results of the study found volume and area measurement were more reliable than perimeter and depth measurement.
