Monitoring System and Realistic Work Standards: Keys to Improving Transcription Productivity
Article Abstract:
Since St. Joseph's Hospital of Milwaukee had a significant transcription backlog in Medical Records, it was decided to explore the possibility of using advanced word processing equipment. A subsequent analysis indicated that shared-logic word processing equipment, establishment of a monitoring system and installation of realistic productivity standards could produce a forty to fifty per cent productivity improvement. From the monitoring system that was implemented, three management reports are generated - an individual daily statistics report, a previous day listing of transcribed reports and a previous week's statistics reports. Determining and implementing productivity standards involved a multistep approach that would allow the operators to achieve reachable goals. Benefits of the system included a fifty-one per cent productivity increase, reduced staff, a 1.1 year investment payback, forms reduction, form handling reduction, reduced turnaround time and improved quality.

Establishing Objective Performance Standards
Article Abstract:
Several variables that should be considered when developing performance standards are the productivity and quality of current performance, a determination of minimum requirements as established by regulatory agencies and an evaluation of the importance of each work task. Before standards can be set, key result areas (KRAs), those tasks for which standards must be set, must be determined. Once KRAs are determined data collection schedules must be implemented. In order to set performance standards the acceptibility of current performance must be determined. Communication and employee involvement are important in a performance system's success.
