Nurses call for regulations on hospital staffing ratios
Article Abstract:
Nurses across the country are interested in the outcome of a bill in the California legislature that would establish minimum nurse/patient ratios in hospitals. A study of 10,000 nurses showed that 78% believe that they are working in hospitals that are chronically under-staffed. However, not all nurses and hospitals agree that ratios should be determined by state legislatures. The California Assn of Hospitals and Health Systems is opposed to such a philosophy, as it may not account for differences in facilities. They say that setting ratios does not help hospitals address issues such as quality care and rising costs.

Tapping into teams
Article Abstract:
Team management experts say that it may worthwhile for hospitals and health care organizations to try the team management concept if they are well informed and prepared. Lakeland Regional Medical Center is one health group that is using the team management system. Lakeland, which has 75 teams, has discovered that everything does not go perfectly when large numbers of people are involved in decision making. However, Jim Williams of Kaiser Permanente says that the use of teams will be crucial in building integrated health delivery systems.
