Physiologic changes in heart failure - "What's new"
Article Abstract:
The heart may remodel its functions following heart failure. Models of congestive heart failure (CHF) show that the heart ventricle remodels itself when the heart muscle is injured. The heart muscle may grow in size in response to the loss of muscle cells but be less efficient. Blood vessels outside the heart may adapt to CHF, reducing blood flow and skeletal muscle strength. Use of heart models to study CHF may produce better treatment interventions.

Epidemiologic and economic impact of advanced heart failure
Article Abstract:
The cost of treating congestive heart failure (CHF) may continue to rise in the U.S. The number of people who are diagnosed with CHF is rising because more people are older adults, and age is a major predictor of CHF. Therapeutic drugs such as vasodilators and ACE inhibitors may reduce the cost of treating CHF, but artificial hearts and heart assist devices are very expensive CHF treatments. Prevention may be the most cost effective measure.

Factors contributing to rehospitalization of elderly patients with heart failure
Article Abstract:
Medication and nonadherence to diets are the key causes of rehospitalization of elderly patients with heart failure. Social factors such as the absence of strong support systems contributed to nonadherence. These results, obtained from evaluating the research files of 16 heart failure patients, suggest that social factors must form part of each care plan to prevent rehospitalization of patients with this medical problem.
