Provider involvement in managed care underwriting
Article Abstract:
Managed care companies may benefit from the knowledge of the underwriting process. It is an important aspect of managed care programs since the process enables insurance managers to determine whether they will accept a company for insurance coverage or not. The basic components of the underwriting process, which include contract development, premium setting, establishing standards and intensive monitoring, as well as the managed care provider's role in each are discussed. Active participation of managed care providers may ensure the success of managed care plans.

The effects of preferred provider organizations on health care use and costs
Article Abstract:
Preferred provider organizations (PPO) are managed care plans linked with cost savings of 12% for every covered life. Its low cost savings are mainly being attributed to lower utilization rates, 19% of which is attributable to physician office visits and hospital admissions. Sample results showed that PPOs offer some form of managed care savings to some employer organizations that are not as high as those offered by other health maintenance groups.
