Putting faith in religion and medicine
Article Abstract:
The Greater Hollywood Health Partnership is a joint project between the Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and 23 local churches to provide preventative health care to the Hollywood community, which includes many poor and non-English speaking residents. Each congregation receives a paid nurse who helps determine the needs of church members and organizes services. The Medical Center also funds low-cost clinics. The program, which costs a total of $500,000 per year, saves the Medical Center money because patients stay healthier and need fewer trips to the emergency room.

Balancing act
Article Abstract:
Hospitals are developing new strategies to manage emergency departments in the wake of substantial budget cuts. Robert W. Derlet has been credited with developing a controversial approach to emergency care known as "triage out." The clinical triage system, which was developed at the University of California-Davis, evaluates patients to determine which accommodations will best suit their needs. The system has reduced hospital expenditures and in many cases increased patient satisfaction.
