Sources of stigma associated with women with HIV
Article Abstract:
HIV-infected women may be stigmatized for multiple reasons. Women may be stigmatized because of gender and even more than men for poverty, race, for being sexually active, and for being homosexuals. They have been blamed as carriers, either as prostitutes infecting men or mothers infecting their infants. Within the epidemic, their distinctive symptoms have been ignored, services addressing women's needs have been lacking, and they were excluded from drug studies until researchers discovered potential fetal benefits.
