Telling the public the real health cost story
Article Abstract:
The public needs to understand the fundamental reasons why health care costs are so high in America. The public needs to know that controlling hospital expenditures is not the way to decrease costs. Most of the real causes of increased health care costs are societal, and have little to do with the medical care industry. For example, drug abuse, lack of education, urban violence, poor diet, smoking, hurried lifestyles, pollution and poverty all take a great toll on the health of our society. Decisions to spend more money on primary care, rather than on prevention, further increase medical costs.

Moving from competition to collaboration
Article Abstract:
Hospitals must work together to contain costs and deliver the best possible health care. Six steps toward collaborating with other hospitals are presented. The steps include recognizing that relinquishing some power is part of compromise, establishing long-range goals together, bargaining in good faith, making a 'case for cooperation', recognizing that every organization has its own culture and creating a shared and exciting idea of the possible outcome.

Taking environmental action: what you can do
Article Abstract:
Hospitals can demonstrate concern for the health of the entire population by implementing a variety of progressive environmental activities. For example, hospitals can establish a technical task force to evaluate past product choices for their environmental impact. In addition, hospital-wide energy and waste reduction goals could be written into hospital managers' performance objectives. Additional environmental activities are described.
