Ten Hospitals Forge New Directions and Strategies
Article Abstract:
Strategies employed to manage revamped hospital and health care policies are examined. The conduct of ten hospitals was researched and analyzed in terms of administration, staff, cost efficiencies and general philosophies. The study encompassed a geographical area from the east to the west coasts and a sampling of urban and suburban facilities with twenty-eight to 1200 beds. Some hospitals were committed to preventive care as their primary focus in the coronary, pediatric, respiratory, psychiatric and other medical/surgical specialty fields. All hospitals had very strong community values, acting as a resource center for teaching and healing services. Business-tightening tactics, enacted for reorganization or corporate restructuring purposes were not used to engender profits or for marketing gains, but for health care and socially productive patterns.

Article Abstract:
A survey of forty-nine hospitals in the state of Washington was conducted to determine the correlation between their budgeted finances to the actual expenditures. The hospitals were divided into peer groups of similar size, patient utilization, and services offered. In general, the survey revealed that the hospitals were unsuccessful in keeping expenses in line with their projected budgets. They did not realize total budgeted excess revenues and long-range planning can be affected. Charts are included.
