Respiratory syncytial virus infection in infants: a significant challenge for optimal care
Article Abstract:
Few treatments for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in infants have proved to be effective. Research is inconclusive whether prompt ribavirin treatment in infants with severe infections is effective. There have been a number of obstacles in developing an effective RSV vaccine. Bronchodilators and corticosteroids have not proved to be effective treatments. RSV immune globulin and monoclonal antibody treatments may prove to be effective.

Intravenous immunoglobulin: what nurses need to know
Article Abstract:
Researchers have had mixed results in using intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for treating or preventing sepsis in premature infants. IVIG use has been most effective in low birth weight premature infants. Nurses can help prevent cases of sepsis by following strict sterile guidelines. Guidelines are presented for the preparation and delivery of IVIG. Nurses can also educate parents about the implications for future immunizations after IVIG use.

Percutaneous central venous catheters in neonates: a descriptive analysis and evaluation of predictors for sepsis
Article Abstract:
Infants with percutaneous central venous catheters (PCVCs) appear to be at greater risk of developing sepsis the longer the catheter is in place or if they had a low birth weight. PCVCs are tubes inserted into a central blood vessel from a distant blood vessel in order to deliver treatments. Nineteen percent of 565 infants with PCVCs in place developed sepsis related to the catheter.
